The Spear and Jackson PHD-WH Post Hole Digger has twin carbon steel blades which can be opened out to a maximum width of 140mm (5 1/2"). It produces deep, narrow, vertical side holes that minimise the need to backfill. The tool has a heavy duty construction which is suitable for professional contractors and landscapers. Used these for digging out around rotten fence posts to put in concrete spurs. They obviously aren't great at breaking up the existing concrete, but they are excellent for emptying out the rubble and earth. Before I got them it was really tough on the knees, repeatedly getting down and stretching into a 2ft hole to clear it. They aren't cheap, but they are worth it. There are no bumpers at the top to protect your knuckles, but they seem sturdy and work very well.

I purchase this product a spear & jackson heavy duty hole digger with wooden handles, i can tell you what a life saver it is when you have to dig deep narrow holes as i did for my concrete repair spurs, i started to dig the first hole i roughly had to go about 2 feet deep it went down into the earth with no trouble i even hit clay which was no trouble digger out, the hole is nice and narrow about 8" wide, not like a shove or spade where it would be to big and you would use more post mix or concrete filling the hole back, i would reccommend the spear & jackson heavy duty hole digger for digging nice narrow, deep, and vertical side holes it is money well spent. regards robert williams
